“To loving the Lord, how to commit myself❓”

Whatever stops me from loving the Lord, reject.

My phone rang.

Another me said, “Hey, we haven’t seen this number before. Are you going to answer?”

I said, “At least there’s a number. I’ll answer.”

Another me said, “Still answer? You’ve got a financial difficulty, haven’t you? Feel free to tell me.”

I said, “No. Get out. I answer because I have time.”

……

I answered.

The voice said, “Hi, Yip Wai Hung.”

I said, “Excuse me, who are you?”

The voice said, “This is Karen, from Hong Kong International Institute of Music.”

I said, “Ah, Karen, what’s up?”

Karen said, “Next Monday, Oct 4th is the new term.”

I said, “I know.”

Karen said, “It’s the opening ceremony from 7pm to 8pm next Monday.”

I said, “Yes.”

Karen said, “This year, we’d like to invite you to give a student sharing in the opening ceremony.”

I said, “What? What to share?”

Karen said, “The happy and difficult time in HKIIM.”

I said, “How long?”

Karen said, “3-5 minutes.”

I said, “Oh, but it’s just been a year since I started my studies on Higher certificate here.”

Karen said, “We find that we’ve been quite committed in your studies here. That’s why I invite you for a sharing.”

I said, “OK, alright.”

Karen said, “Let me show you the details about the sharing on the phone tomorrow.”

……

Another me said, “Mr. Yip, what does ‘committed’ mean?”

I said, “loyal and willing to give our time and energy to somebody or something that we believe in.”

Another me said, “How about ‘very committed’?”

I said, “Very loyal and willing to give our time and energy to somebody or something that we believe in.”

Another me said, “I am a Christian, one that follows Jesus, so holy that I can’t understand your language that is a little worldly. Can you translate what the meaning of ‘very committed’ into the Bible’s language?

I said, “‘Very committed’ is close to doing something with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

Another me said, “I know, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength, Mark 12:30.”

I said, “Accurate pronunciation and good memory.”

Another me said, “How committed were you in your music studies last year?”

I said, “I completed the High Cert altogether.”

Another me said, “How many evening were you back for classes each week?”

I said, “3 evenings each week.”

Another me said, “Just 3 evenings.”

I said, “After classes came studies, practices and examinations.”

Another me said, “What? How come, your time?”

I said, “Any activities in time conflicts with my music studies, practices and examinations, reject them.”

Another me said, “You rejected all of them, didn’t you?”

I said, “If I hadn’t rejected them, how could I have been committed in learning music and completed the higher certificate altogether last year?”

Another me said, “So in the coming academic year, are you still as committed in learning music, attempting to complete the Diploma in Composition altogether?”

I said, “Yes, I am.”

Another me said, “How many evenings this year?”

I said, “4 evenings.”

Another me said, “1 more evening than last year?”

I said, “No only that, what I’ll learn is in greater depth. I expect I get devote more time and efforts in my music studies.”

Another me said, “Oh my goodness. So much time and effort, I just can’t make it.”

I said, “You don’t like music as much as I do so you can’t be committed. But for the Lord, you should be able to get committed.”

Another me said, “How to get committed?”

I said, “Any that stops you from committing yourself to loving the Lord, reject them. Then, you’ll have the time and effort to commit yourself.”

Another me said, “Are you in parallel universe? Or are you already in heaven?”

I said, “What? You’ve claimed yourself to be a Christian, one that follows Jesus, very holy. Alas, if you don’t reject anything that stops yourself from loving the Lord, how can you be committed? How can you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength?”

Very encouraging - true commitment is always a reflection of the heart, which is made evident by the quantity and quality of our love as measured by our time, effort and resources sacrificed. Thank you, Wai Hung!
