Parent said, “My son was good at English in primary. But he isn’t since secondary.”

I said, “Why?”

Parent said, “Since secondary, he’s never passed in the English exams.”

I said, “Maybe, it isn’t your son that gets worse in English but it’s the test paper that turns more difficult.”

Parent said, “Let’s take a look at the mid-term exam paper.”

I said, “Alright.”

Parent took out a USB and plugged it into the laptop computer.

Parent said, “Here they are.”

I said, “Let’s look at the reading paper first.”

Parent clicked it open.

I pointed at the first blank in the first paragraph of the passage,

I said, “Boy, do you know the part of speech of the answer in this blank?”

Son said, “Adverb.”

I said, “No, it should be an adjective. Let’s move on to the writing paper.”

Parent clicked it open.

I pointed at the third line of the first paragraph,

I said, “Do you know why your teacher’s commented that this sentence was well-written?”

Son said, “No.”

I said, “Because of your appropriate and accurate use of Subjunctive Mood.”

Son said, “What is Subjunctive Mood?”

I said, “You can use it without knowing it? Is it a recitation?”

Son said, “......”

Parent said, “Reading his paper, how do you find his English?”

I said, “He has in mind quite a lot of things. He’s really confused. Overall, his English foundation is weak. He needs to build it up step by step.

Parent said, “But it’s the final exam in June.”

I said, “Today is March 11th. So you want a pass in the final exam in 3 months?”

Parent said, “Yes, of course.”

I said, “Impossible.”

Parent said, “Why is it impossible?”

I said, “There are a lot of problems in his English foundation that need fixing. We get to do it step by step. I see him only an hour a week where there is teaching, learning, practicing, correcting and discussing. Even if he closely follows what I say, it still takes at least a year for some changes to come.”

Parent said, “But he’s attended another tutorial centre for 2 years already. Why are there still problems in his English foundation?”

I said, “Probably nothing has been done to build up his English foundation there.”

Parent said, “So how about the final exam?”

I said, “If you consider it a failure not to pass the coming final exam, then prepare for a failure.”

Parent said, “How can you help him now?”

I said, “To build up his English foundation step by step. Alright, time’s up. It’s time to leave. Take your time and think about it. Bye.”

.......

Another me said, “Hey! Doesn’t God say that He can turn the impossible to the possible?”

I said, “Yes, He does.”

Another me said, “Why don’t you give Him a knock?”

I said, “No more knocks. I’ve already opened the door for the parents and tell them how I can help their son to build up his English foundation!”

Another me said, “Fine. Forget about knocking. But can you make a few prayer requests to God?”

I said, “What do you want?”

Another me said, “The boy can pass the final exam in 3 months.”

I said, “The boy, the time should be 3 years.”

Another me said, “It’s impossible to you, but possible to God. Just pray.”

I said, “So you want very much the boy can reap in 3 months the fruit that should take 3 years to reap, right?”

Another me said, “Yes, of course.”

I said, “Then, don’t wait anymore. Now, wipe the magic lamp and call the spirit Genie.
