At the end of the Applied Music Class

Director said, “It’s time. Danny’s arrived.”

I said, “Where is Danny?”

Director said, “At zoom.”

Director started zoom.

I said, “Hi, Danny.”

Danny said, “Hey, Wai Hung. Are you preparing for the piece the you perform in the student concert?”

I said, “Yes, play it to you next time we meet.”

Danny said, “Great.”

Director said, “Danny, have you applied for the student concert?”

Danny said, “No.”

Director said, “Do it now. Still some time before the deadline.”

I said, “I’m going for dinner. Enjoy.”

Director said, “OK, Wai Hung. See you next week.”

Danny sent me a WhatsApp text.

Danny said, “I received a sincere invitation from the director to the third student concert on June 10.”

I said, “I heard it before I left.”

Danny said, “I don’t think I’ll make an rejection.”

I said, “Accept it then.”

Danny said, “The director would like us to have duet performance, shall we?”

I said, “Duet?”

Danny said, “Yes.”

I said, “Which piece?”

Danny sent me a score.

I read it and thought a while.

Danny said, “Shall we?”

I said, “Yes, duet.”

Danny said, “I’ll sign the application and send it back to the director.”

I said, “OK.”

Danny said, “I was a little nervous.”

I said, “Start practising.”

Danny said, “Let’s start our practice after your performance in the first student concert.”

I said, “OK.”

Another said, “Have you done duet before?”

I said, “Never.”

Another said, “Never? Can you manage it?”

I said, “I read the score. I’m confident.”

Another said, “Where does your confidence come from?”

I said, “It comes from my understanding of my abilities. Now that the director asked Danny to find me. This proves that I’m believed to be able to do it.”

Another said, “Alas, where comes the confidence? How dare you, with no prior experience take the invitation to give a duet performance in the student concert?

I said, “I want some breakthrough.”

Another said, “What?”

I said, “That is, I want to try with the Lord something that I have never done before.”

Another said, “What?”

I said, “That is, even with no experience, if the Lord grants me a chance, I will…”

Another said, “If the Lord grants me a chance, what will you do?”

I said, “If the Lord grants me a chance, I’ll try my best.”

Another said, “Even if you try your best, you may end up in failure in front of the audience.”

I said, “If I try my best, I may also end up in success.”

Another said, “Fine. How are you going to give your try?”

I stood up, turned over the piano cover, placed the duet score and started practising.
