“In preparation for exams, how to find the Lord’s support❓”

By not getting too focused on win and loss.

Trinity College of Music - AMusTCL Theory Exam Preparation Class

Another me said, “How did you know the Trinity College of Music - AMusTCL Theory Exam?”

I said, “In the course leaflet of the spring term.”

Another me said, “When did you make the application? How come I don’t know it?”

I said, “Why do I have to report to you everything I do? You aren’t my Lord, are you?”

Another me said, “I’m not interested in any argument with you. Why did you apply for it in the first place?”

I said, “Simple. I applied for an exam-preparation class to prepare for the exam.”

Another me said, “You’ve got Grade 8 theory. You can just make a wild attempt. Why did you spend time and effort in exam preparation?”

I said, “I spend time and effort - to win.”

…..

Teacher gave a self-introduction.

…….

Another me said, “Did you pay a lot for the class?”

I said, “Not really, just a few thousand.”

Another me said, “A few thousand?”

I said, “Yes.

Another me said, “Do you know the teacher’s academic qualification?”

I said, “He’s a doctor in music, majoring in composition.”

Another me said, “You paid just a few thousand only to find that the Lord has called a doctor in Music to prepare you for the exam. He’s made an offer far too generous.”

…….

Teacher distributed the course outline and several sets of lecture notes.

Teacher said, “Let’s take a look at the course outline. There are 20 lessons in this AMusTCL Exam Preparation course. Each lesson takes 3 hours, so altogether 60 hours.”

I took a look at the course outline.

Teacher said, “The 20 lessons are organised as follows: We’ll deal with 1 question in about every 3 lesson, 6 questions altogether. You’re going to attempt 5 out of 6 in the exam.”

I took a look at the course outline again.

Teacher said, “The lesson time is as follows: 2 lesson each week between June and August. We’ll deal with the harder questions in Part A.”

I took a look at the course outline again.

Teacher said, “2 lessons each week in September. We’ll deal with the easier ones in Part A.“

I took a look at the course outline again.

Teacher said, “The course ends at the last Thursday at the end of September, just before the start of the next term in October. A month after that, in November, it is the exam.”

I took a look at the course outline.

Teacher said, “This year is quite special. It has been years since the last time that this course was launched.”

Student said, “Why?”

Teacher said, “Not enough enrolments.”

Student said, “Why is it re-launched this year?”

Teacher said, “The school wants a try after so many years. Who knows? This year, we’ve got enough enrolments. So here we go again.”

…….

Another me said, “Wow, you’ve employed a new secretary?”

I said, “Crazy? The one standing at the front is a musician, an artist.”

Another me said, “A musician, an artist, should have his time in a mess, right?”

I said, “He is not only a musician, an artist, but also a scholar studying music theories systematic and organised.”

Another me said, “Hey, the several thousand you’ve paid is just enough for the classroom rental. What a gift! The Lord is offering a real bargain.”

I said, “Haha, hold on!”

Another me said, “What’s wrong?”

I said, “How can you notice the Lord is offering a real bargain? Why can I do so, even though I myself paid the price.”

Another me said, “You’re simply blind to the Lord. How can the blind see what the Lord has offered?”

I said, “You’re a Christian and so am I. We wear some magnifiers so you can see the bargain price tag.”

Another me said, “No magnifiers.”

I said, “No magnifiers? So why can you see the real bargain but I can’t?”

Another me said, “Because you blind yourself with your blind desire to win in the exam.”

I said, “Exams are something like a competition. The ending is either win or loss. Is there anything else?”

Another me said, “There is God.”

I said, “God, there is when I win. There isn’t when I lose.”

Another me said, “Are you the one that has arranged a doctor in Music to prepare you for the exam?”

I said, “No, I am not.”

Another me said, “Are you the one that asked the lecturer to make you an exam preparation schedule?”

I said, “No, I am not.”

Another me said, “Are you the one that asked the music school to re-launch this year the course that had long been postponed and called for enough enrolment?”

I said, “No, I am not.”

Another me said, “Are you the one that asked the music school to remind you of the AMusTCL Theory Exam in the spring course leaflet?”

I said, “No, I am not.”

Another me said, “Are you the one that paid you the salary with which you have settled your several thousand course fee?”

I said, “No, I am not.”

Another me said, “I get it. You’re none of the above. But God, to you, there is when you win. There isn’t when you lose. God neither provides no support, nor keep you from finding His support. But it is you that blind yourself to Him with your blind desire to win!”

Wai Hung, thank you! I think there’s a lesson in this for us all: “When we depend on God every step of the way, it builds our faith to trust Him when things seem to go our way or not.” Our relationship with Him broadens our perspective and we suddenly realise the extent of God’s Kindness - (He has always been there), regardless of whether we receive exactly what we thought we wanted. Indeed, our desires can even be transformed in the process. On the other hand, now realising His Faithfulness in response to our prayers, we can be sure that He will provide what it is we really need without any doubt, whether “win” or “lose”.
