Teacher said, “Let’s do a dictation before we leave.”

Students were astonished.

Student A said, “Music Dictation?”

Teacher said, “Yes, I’m going to play a recording three times. You take down the complete melody you hear. It’s 8-bar long. Now everybody, get yourself a stave.”

Student B said, “Have you got a stave with you?”

Student C said, “No.”

Teacher said, “Who hasn’t got a stave?”

Over half of the class put up their hands.

Teacher said, “Are you guys music students? How can a music student not bring a stave with them?”

Teacher gave everyone a sheet of paper on which a stave is printed.

Teacher said, “Alright. The first time you hear the melody, take down the note value. The second time, take down the pitch. The last time, make final corrections.”

Teacher played the music three times.

Teacher said, “OK. Let me see your dictation one by one.”

I handed in my stave.

Teacher said, “Wa, Yip Wai Hung.”

I said, “Yes.”

Teacher said, “There’s a rhythm shift since the 3rd bar.”

I said, “What is rhythm shift?”

Teacher said, “Wrong beat.”

I said, “That isn’t too bad. Only the beat is wrong.”

Teacher said, “The pitch isn’t accurate either. How can you compose music?”

I said, “So how can I have accurate listening?”

Teacher said, “Go home and listen to music every day.”

I said, “What to listen?”

Teacher said, “d-d, d-r, d-m, d-f, d-s, d-l, d-t, d-d’, get familiar to C Major first.”

I said, “Why should I have listened to ‘d’ every time before I can listen to another note?”

Teacher said, “You need the tonic note, the “d”, as the basis first. Then, listen to another note. Compare it with the basis and you can distinguish different sounds. Only when you can tell the differences can you manage accurate listening.”

......

Another me said, “There’re so many people around me. So many voices. I have little idea which one to listen to.”

I said, “Take God’s voice as the basis. Any human voice that contradicts with His, ignore it; Those that do not contradicts with His, and are sensible, not a bad idea to listen to it.

Another me said, “How to take God’s voice as the basis?”

I said, “You need to receive His voice first. Every day when you get up, listen to His voice first. Then, listen to others. Compare them with His and you can distinguish different voices and tell how far theirs are different from His.

Another me said, “But God doesn’t speak. Even the devil has no idea about His voice.”

I said, “The devil does know His voice well. Even Satan can recognise Jesus.”

Another me said, “When I pray, I’ve never heard of God talking. Where is His voice?”

I said, “It is somewhere over there. You can listen to it anytime you want.”

Another me said, “Where is it?”

I said, “Try to type the words “The Bible” on YouTube. See how much of His voice you can find?”

Another me said, “Alas...but...anyway...do you know...I...”

I said, “I know your difficulties.”

Another me said, “Glad that you know.”

I said, “I know as well, why, His voice, even the devil can hear but you don’t.”

Another me said, “Why?”

I said, “Because, compared with the devil, you’re much lazier.”
